Top Four Clash In Toon

Newcastle Eagles v London Lions

Details: Friday 2 February, 7:30pm, Sport Central, BBL Championship

Last meeting: Eagles 85-79 Lions (Championship October 2017)

A top-four clash to start the weekend as the Lions head to the North-East for the second time this season. Newcastle are two wins behind league leaders, Leicester, while London aiming to close the gap on the three sides above them.

Newcastle Eagles; The Eagles have been the bench mark for many seasons under Coach Flournoy, however this season is seeing quite a transition, with a lot of new players in the side and a different style of game the Eagles have been trying to bed down. Out of both knockout competitions it’s definitely changing times at the Eagles. Having said that they are knocking on Leicester’s door at the top of the table and with the first spade going into the ground on their new Arena you write this storied franchise off at your peril.

Head Coach; Coach Fabulous Flournoy has seen it all and done it all. A seasoned veteran as a player and a coach he has dealt well with certain disappointments this season. He will make sure his side is fully focused on the Championship and return to playing Eagles Basketball.

Last Time Out; The last time the two teams met was in October when the Lions had a full compliment of players. A great game saw the Lions lead going into the fourth quarter before a 9-0 Eagles run changed things and delivered the home win.

One To Watch; Saah Nimley – the lightning quick point guard has never met a shot he doesn’t think he can make, hitting three’s from every corner of the court he has been a real spark for the Eagles.

What They Say; “As always it will be tough in Newcastle” said Coach Macaulay, “A very strong team with smart players, Darius Defoe is always a handful and in two very savvy players in the Williams brothers you expect them to always be challenging. We are prepared and will look for chinks that we can exploit and try to get back on track after a mediocre performance in Bristol”

Did You Know; Newcastle Eagles have won more trophies than any other club in the BBL. Darius Defoe is 32 points away from joining the 5,000 Club.

Season record: Wagles 1-0 Lions
